16.01.2005. American Symphony Orchestra starts 2005 with Russian music

Leon Botstein

The New Year begins with a commemoration of the year 1905, in a program of music composed during and influenced by the events of this revolutionary year in Russian history. Three brief works of Stravinsky, Glazunov and Miaskovksy -- written in the years surrounding 1905 -- begin the program. Then Shostakovich's epic, gripping Eleventh Symphony, subtitled "1905" and composed in 1957, brings this concert to a powerful close.
