Public radio stations, such as the one in my home state of Maine, hardly venture beyond the most familiar names in Russian classical music and these names tend to be those of the more "westernized" composers -- Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Prokofiev-- along with familiar pieces from the great classics: Mussorgsky, P. Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and some Glazunov, Liadov, Borodin, Balakirev, Ivanov-Ipolitov, Medtner, and the occasional Shostakovich. That's pretty much the extent of the radio repertoire. Similarly, university audio-video libraries in this state have not kept up at all with Russian labels such as Melodiya, Russian Disc, and Russian Revelation or with Olympia and Naxos. Without the possibility of becoming acquainted with Taneyev, Myaskovsky, Vainberg, Shebalin or even Kabalevsky on the radio and on the campuses, one can almost speak of the persistence of a cultural "iron curtain" but it's now located in the USA!

Георгий: if only 1% of all Mozart performances in 2006 would be turned over to Мясковский we would be delighted, wouldn'd we...

(Mozart is even older than you think, my friend: 250 years. ) That's right: I've noticed my misprint too late :-))))) -------------- (but shamefully Taneyev and Myaskovsky will be ignored... What to do about it?) I have no idea. Moreover, I think. most of modern people, especially from the West, don't know music of Taneyev and Myaskovsky and never heard even their names. :-/

Mozart is even older than you think, my friend: 250 years. I never realized before that 2006 is Taneyev's year as well. I think Mozart and Shostakovitch will attrack loads of attention, but shamefully Taneyev and Myaskovsky will be ignored... What to do about it?

* 200-летие Моцарта
* 150-летие Танеева
* 125-летие НИКОЛАЯ ЯКОВЛЕВИЧА МЯСКОВСКОГО
* 100-летие Шостаковича
=====================
